How Destiny's Child Forged a Bond Between Roommates
Seeing as my last long-term roommate was my little sister, I was incredibly nervous to be living with three other girls in a college dorm room. The thought of sharing a living space with people who were essentially strangers was freaking me out. Move-in day came and went, and I was pretty much satisfied with my roommates. We all got along well; I didn’t think we would have any problems whatsoever. We weren’t the closest of friends, but we tolerated and generally liked each other.
But, everything changed on one fateful night.
My roommate Katie may deny it, but I specifically remember Wednesday, August 22, 2012, as the night we all really bonded.
It wasn’t like it was a special night…at first. But as we were all chatting in our beds, about to go to sleep, we had a conversation that I believed changed the course of our entire roommate journey.
I don’t remember who started it, but someone asked, “if you had one wish, what would you wish for?” Erin, Erica and I all gave pretty standard answers. Fame, money, a really hot husband. Katie, however, told us she would wish for a Destiny’s Child reunion. Not surprisingly, we all found that completely hilarious. She maintained that Destiny’s Child was the best, and their reunion would bring her infinite joy.
And then began a beautiful, 4-way relationship, based mainly off of a mutual love for 90s music and a general understanding that we are all super weird.
At any given time in room 130, one can expect to hear some Ja Rule blasting from a laptop. While we might groan when it comes on, and yell at whoever is playing it, we all secretly love it. We are so outwardly mean to each other that most people probably think we’re dysfunctional. In reality, we are just a group of four roommates who love to mess around.
I wouldn’t change my roommate situation for any other out there. I am so glad I chose to live where I live, and to be with the girls I’m with. Honestly, you can make the best out of any roommate situation. Just try to keep an open mind and let them in– odds are, they really want to get to know you too.
